3rd Taliban suspect denied bail
More on Shiraz Qazi, the third local man arrested for allegedly conspiring to help the Taliban: Yesterday, he was ordered to be held without bail because prosecutors said he heard conversations about possible terrorist acts and didn’t tell authorities.
Qazi, remember, was the guy who prosecutors were so vague about last week — they said his arrest was related to the arrests of two other local men and another in Dallas, but they didn’t say how. Turns out Qazi has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm by an alien (he’s from Pakistan and was here on a student visa), but his public defender, Brent Newton, said that was a mistake. Newton said a law prohibiting people in the U.S. on student visas from owning guns wasn’t on the books when Qazi got here, and he wasn’t told when the law took effect.
As for yesterday’s ruling from U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy, there aren’t many details: Federal prosecutors said Qazi failed to let anyone know about possible terrorist plans he was privy to and argued that Qazi would be a flight risk if bail was granted. Authorities said he’s being held in solitary confinement.
