FBI agent details alleged Taliban aspirant probe

The trial of Syed Maaz Shah, who is linked to a Houston-based Taliban conspiracy, opened Monday in federal court with FBI Special Agent John McKinley as the government’s first witness.

McKinley described how authorities recorded conversations among Muslim men at a local campground and collected enough information to charge four Muslim students as Taliban aspirants.

Shah, 19, was attending the University of Texas at Dallas on a student visa in November when he was charged with two weapons violations.

The government has since added two more charges alleging that the Pakistani’s visa had expired when he allegedly handled guns.
