Schumer: JFK Plot Unrealistic, But Warns of Terror Cells

Updated: June 5, 2007, 8:21 am

A plan to blow up New York’s Kennedy Airport sounded especially devastating, but New York Senator Chuck Schumer says that luckily, the alleged plotters were unprofessional.

Schumer says the plot, which allegedly involved plans to blow up huge fuel tanks at the airport and start fires in pipelines leading to those tanks, was unrealistic.

Still, he warns that the threat of terror remains very real.

Schumer says the FBI should work with local law enforcement to uncover small terror cells. He warns that federal officials won’t be able to find “every little terrorist group” on their own. Schumer says such cells may not be affiliated with groups like al-Qaida, but they are inspired by them.

The alleged mastermind in the JFK Airport case has a bail hearing tomorrow. Two other suspects are in Trinidad and will fight extradition to the U.S.
